Green Roofing - Eco-friendly Roofing Solutions

As Government targets for more affordable housing are met we are left with less and less outside space where flora and fauna can thrive. Gardens are getting smaller and smaller although they account for most of the space available for urban wildlife species. One way of counteracting this is by using an area of the house that is often forgotten about until a few tiles come off in a storm.

There are many benefits to green roofing and although some may argue that it is more expensive to install, a green roof will generally last two to three times as long and need less expensive maintenance throughout its life. It can also be mounted on smaller areas such as garages and garden sheds. Here are a few other benefits

Most importantly, the Green Roof provides a habitat for wildlife and a space for trees, shrubs and flowers to grow.

There are two main types of Green Roof consisting of the various layers which you can see in the image below –

Extensive
Generally a shallow and light-weight layer of substrate planted with low-growing stress-tolerant grasses, mosses and alpine species, requiring little or no maintenance,

Intensive
Consisting of a thicker layer of soil, with a wider variety of flora from flowers right up to trees. These require more maintenance than the extensive type, but the benefits outweigh any extra hard work put in as these roofs are very important for wildlife habitat.
