Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting was used by Man for centuries before mains water supply was introduced to the civilized world. It was extremely commonplace, with examples having been seen to be in place as far back as Roman times and in some cases the only way of making sure you had any water at all. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the first known types of a rainwater harvested irrigation system.

Alongside the resurgence in growing our own food, greater need for recycling, reduction in waste, and a generally better educated attitude to our personal responsibility for the planet we live on, comes a renewed interest in harvesting rainwater.

Although the last two summers would seem to suggest otherwise the reality is that we need to implement ways of retaining this water when it falls, both to prevent flash flooding and to preserve water for times of high demand or shortage.

Trials have shown that harvesting rainwater can reduce mains consumption by 50%. You can use it to wash the car, water the garden, flush the loo and wash your clothes.

JB Landscapes Ltd can build harvesting systems starting from a very basic water butt in the garden filling off the guttering, to more complicated systems incorporating pumps, filters and irrigation.
